Ethical Lessons From Representing Guantanamo Detainees1 Hour Illinois MCLE Professionalism (ethics) Credit Course overview: H. Candace Gorman, an Illinois attorney who represents detainees at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo, Cuba on a pro-bono basis, will use her experiences in this highly unusual quasi-judicial environment to examine attorneys' ethical obligations to represent clients in more conventional settings. The course will explore how the absence of fundamental legal protections for accused persons challenges an attorney's ability to act consistent with the best interests of a client and of society. This course is not designed to teach attorneys how to practice at Guantanamo. Rather, it will help attorneys understand the assumptions underlying the rules of ethics that apply to every attorney's practice. |
